Google prepares recommendations for articles and events

New article recommendations in Chrome

With the new redesigns of Google Chrome, the company was encouraged to start introducing article recommendations on the New Tab screen. In the style of functions and tools such as the old Google Now or the new Google Feed, it is a method to use articles that you have already read and recommend new content. Little by little they have been implementing it in the browser and, facing v70, there will be more news.

First of all, the option cannot be disabled. You can ignore the articles if you want, but you cannot prevent them from appearing under the most visited pages. Second, a new button is prepared to access even more article recommendations in Chrome. Basically, if you are reading an article like this one, you can press a new button next to the address bar to bring up related topics, which you can access with a single touch.

To activate this function of More like this, you will need to use Chrome Canary or Chrome Dev in version 70. You must also activate two flags:

  • chrome: // flags / # enable-contextual-suggestions-bottom-sheet
  • chrome: // flags / # enable-contextual-suggestions-button

Google will recommend events through Search

As we mentioned at the beginning, Chrome will not be the only app Google dedicate himself to recommending more things. For some, this next function may be more intrusive, as it will occur on search. At the moment it is an exclusive function of the United States that will be activated in the next few days, but in due course it will eventually reach the rest of the territories. The idea is that, when you are looking for information on some activities, events are directly recommended to you in new cards that appear in the search.

You can even search events near me to receive general recommendations, although you will probably be more successful looking for things a little more specific like cooking workshops or free concerts. In addition, there will be a specialized tab to show events that may interest you, whether you search for them or not.
