How to create widgets with buttons to perform actions

What is Action Blocks?

It is an app created by Google, which is used to create shortcuts to apps or routes and that can be placed on the screen. These shortcuts work hand in hand with Google Assistant, that is to say, all action we carry out will be through the assistant, thus replacing our voice to activate it. In this way, the mission of Action Blocks is to solve the problems that people with some cognitive disability or that they belong to the third age and make it, in short, the handling with the technology easier.

However, the rest of us mortals can take advantage of this very useful tool. This saves us from searching in the personal assistant for the most everyday aspects of the day-to-day, such as checking the time, the agenda or opening the music app. So, no need to repeat by voice these actions, simply with a press we have already carried out.

These shortcuts work like pictograms. In other words, they do not show the actions explicitly in words, but are represented through figures, although a title can be added to said pictogram. Of course, they can be resized on the desktop to different sizes. The downside is that app is in english, although the wizard reproduces the actions in the language that is configured by default.

How to create button widgets in Action Blocks

With the app installed in the Play Store, the way in which these widgets or pictograms are created is very simple. The Action Blocks interface selects a series of basic tasks, such as playing music, setting an alarm or checking the alarm, although there are more tasks that can be customized. In addition, we can make as many as we want for free, so the idea becomes much more attractive. Let’s go with some examples:

  1. In the main menu, we go to the button “Create Action Block”. Once there, we choose the task we want to execute, be it an alarm, open an app, a reminder or to block the terminal.action create widget
  2. In this case, we have chosen to open the Spotify app with a simple touch. To do this, we write the order for Google Assistant, which will suffice to put ‘Spotify’. We can run a test so that the order is clear.action block spotify
  3. If we are satisfied, click on Β«NextΒ». In the following menu, we can put a custom title to the widget, as well as a header image, either from the app’s gallery or from our terminal.action block add widget
  4. Finally, the app asks us if we want to add the widget to the desktop screen. We confirm and the shortcut will be added immediately. An important note is that sometimes it doesn’t usually work, so we hold down the icon of that floating window to add it manually. However, these widgets can be edited or deleted whenever we want, just go back into the application.
