How to know what song is playing with Google Assistant

Have you ever turned on the radio and wondered: ‘How is this song called? Sure you do, and in other situations such as in shopping centers or in nightclubs, maybe it has also happened to you. And first you had to ask someone. Now, however, it is enough to ask the question to our smartphone, because among many other functions we have it available in Google assistant. You just have to know how to do it so that it tells us what song is playing.

In our smartphone we have a microphone and constant Internet connection. This is more than enough so that, taking advantage of the technology of Google assistant, we can know what song is playing at any time. Years ago it was something for which we needed a specific application –like Shazam, for example-. But now this technology is integrated directly into Google’s virtual assistant. And the truth is that the speed with which it recognizes songs, and the variety that it can recognize, is extraordinary.

‘Ok Google what song is playing?’ The command to recognize songs

While a song is playing, just tell your smartphone the command ‘Ok Google’ to activate Google Assistant, and then ‘How is this song called?’. Something that, as you already know, you can do everything continuously by telling your device ‘Ok Google what’s the name of this song?’. But the Google Assistant is much more complete than that of its competitors and not only accepts this command but also other similar ones such as ‘Ok Google what song is playing?.

Saying any of these commands will open Google’s virtual assistant, Google Assistant, and it will automatically start listening. We will see it in the form of waves. In a few seconds it will return the spoken and written answer, on the screen, as in the previous screenshot. Not only does it tell us what song it is and by what artist, but it also allows us to search for it on Google, listen to it on YouTube and buy it in the Play Store, and share it in any other app.

Just below the name of the song we also have the lyrics available. And as contextual suggestions, Google allows us to quickly access more songs by the same artist, as well as information about the artist of that song. The operation of this tool, obviously, depends on the clarity with which the song can be perceived by the integrated microphone of the device. If it doesn’t hear properly, it may not work as it should.
