Podcasts: how you can install the new Google application
In a series of articles for Pacific Content, Google has begun detailing its development plans for the podcast world. The company wants its piece of cake from a growing industry that is becoming one of the most popular options for consuming content online. Due to this, they have launched their own application to listen to podcasts through mobile phones.
And how is this application used? You have to understand that we are not before a native program from the Play Store, nor exactly before a Progressive Web Application. You can access these Podcasts from Google through your search engine. What you need to do is search for a show you want to listen to and see the search results. If the show is correctly indexed, its latest episodes will appear in the first result, as well as a button for More episodes. Press it and it will take you to the list of all episodes. There you can subscribe, in addition to going to the main application of Podcasts if you click on the button on the top left. From there, two options: accept the pop-up notice or click on the three-dot button at the top right and choose Add to home screen.
Once you have done this, you will have the icon on the desktop and it will be enough to use it to access the application. Google Explain how podcasts are indexed for them to appear this way, so each program must apply those guides to appear like this, either in search or in the application.
What it’s like to use the Google Podcasts app
Podcasts it is a very simple and effective application. In the home you will have in the upper area the podcasts that you have chosen to follow to quickly access them. Next you will have an area to Keep listening the episodes you have left in the middle, and then you will see different categories of the most popular, trends, and so on. If you click on the three-point button at the top right, you will have the option to Add to home screen already mentioned, in addition to the possibility of Edit podcasts to control your subscriptions and a button to Post comments.
Through the search you will be able to find your favorite programs and in principle there will be no problems to find the most popular ones. However, this tool has just been released and it is expected that more will be added as time passes. According to the reproduction, it’s as simple as clicking on an episode and getting started. In the notifications you will have multimedia control to stop, delay ten seconds or advance thirty.
The episode also appears in the lower area. If you click on the name, you will see the same multimedia controls, as well as a timer to move more accurately. You can also control the playback speed, from 0.5x to 2x. Finally, you have a button that will allow you to access the complete list of episodes.
In ours tests, Playback has been pretty smooth, without any obvious problems. Obviously distortions occur if the playback speed is changed, nothing out of the ordinary. It will also depend on each program and especially on each user and their ability to listen at a higher or lower speed.
It should also be noted that in the United States and Canada Google already offered the possibility of listening to podcasts through Play Music. However, it seems that this system, at least for the moment, is not going to be extended, betting instead on this new application.
Integration with Google Assistant and future plans: doubling the global audience
In addition, and although at the moment this is still aimed at the US market, this new application is already integrated with Google assistant and Google Home smart speakers. All you have to do is ask your assistant to play a specific podcast for it to start playing, or even to continue it if it was in the middle.
What all this shows is a great effort on the part of Google in making podcasts accessible to everyone. In the Play store It is very easy to find applications to reproduce these programs, so it is normal that Google wants to contribute its vision. Taking into account the number of people who have access to an Android mobile already Google, the truth is that the number of new users that they can attract is very large. The idea, after all, is to double the number of podcast listeners across the globe.
