It has become fashionable for headphones to be hands-free, to include a microphone, and also some buttons to control some smartphone actions, such as receiving calls, pausing the song, raising or lowering the volume, or even activating the voice search. Android is a common operating system for many smartphones, but the truth is that not all smartphones have the same functions, although all of those have Android, and the same happens with headphones, that not all those who carry those smartphones are the same or compatible with other smartphones. But, this problem can be found even with generic hands-free headphones that we buy in any specialized store. We have found this problem with the new generation Motorola Moto G, this year 2014, and some Xiaomi Mi Piston 2 headphones, whose analysis we published last week. These headphones have a handsfree with action buttons that work even with Apple devices.
However, Motorola have always been smartphones with additional functions that can be activated from the headphones, which is the reason why the Xiaomi MiKey button does not work on these smartphones either. The biggest problem that we have encountered is not that the action buttons of the headphones do not work, but that nothing is directly reproduced through them, since the smartphone detects an incorrect configuration, and reproduces using the integrated speakers.
The Xiaomi Mi Piston 2 have a price of 18 euros, and they are not a great loss, but the same could happen to us with high-end headphones, with much higher prices. What can we do to solve the problem?
It’s simple, we just have to fool the smartphone. If the headphones we connect are not “compatible” with the smartphone, just use a cable that masks the headphones as an intermediary. We can use any of these cables that serve as a jack extension. These cables are usually one meter or more. If we want them shorter, we can go to an electronics store to have it manufactured for little money, or even buy it in a store like Dealextreme, for a price of 1.50 euros. It even has certain advantages. You already know that with the passage of time, it is easy for one of the headphones to stop hearing well. This is usually due to a problem with the headphone jack connection. With these cables we avoid that the headphones are connected directly to the smartphone, and if at any moment there are audio problems, it will be enough to replace the cable that goes from the headphones to the smartphone, for very little money, and we will save the power to spoil some headphones that are much more expensive.
