As we brought you the other day, Android Wear changed its name to Wear OS. This represents a relaunch of Google’s operating system for smart watches. You can download the Wear OS APK from this link and installing it will not pose more problems than launching it to our wearable or smart watch to update it. On the other hand, if we wait a few days, the OTA will arrive with this new version that says goodbye forever to the name Android Wear.
What’s new in Wear OS
Well for now we have to say almost none. We are facing the same Android Wear that smartwatches have, that is, those that have been updated to the latest version (which are the second generation onwards). That is why if you have a team of these, you can update it without problems. It works, therefore, with mobiles with Android 4.4 or higher (excluding Go editions) and iPhone with iOS 9.3 or higher.
The only difference you’ll actually see is, as you can see in this video from Android Police, that the boot logo already shows the new Wear OS image.
Even Google, which has accompanied this launch with a post on its official blog and the change in the page, now, from Wear OS, only comments that it comes to better identify the objectives of the Mountain View company in the face of wearables that, on the other hand, they had a little neglected.
Are smartwatches still running?
Well, the truth is that we cannot say that it is much. It is a market that arrived approximately three years ago and was rapidly growing, especially driven by the Apple Watch. Google’s response to Android Wear had some support in the beginning in the form of the Moto 360 and the Huawei Watch, the few smartwatches on the platform with some success. Samsung also mounted the “party” for its part with its Gear and Tizen, so it has finally been a market dominated by Apple.
With Wear OS, we suppose that Google wants to give a new approach to its strategy, separating it, even by name, from Android to also reach other types of users (who knows whether to try to take a bite out of the apple … although it does difficult). We will see how it develops in the coming weeks and, above all, what happens in the face of Google I / O that will take place in May and where we expect more news and updates.
