The Gapps or Google Apps, as their name indicates, are nothing other than the ‘Google apps’. But it is something that must be qualified, because it is a package which includes several, but not all of them. And it is something that, in reality, those who are most interested are users who have or intend to have a custom ROM on your Android smartphone.
Google Apps, as we mentioned, are a package that includes the google apps, but also the Google Play Services; In other words, it is an essential part of any Android device, and that it should be pre-installed on any smartphone. However, it is also available as a standalone package in a .ZIP file, a compressed folder. And in this case, focused on custom ROMs, we have to use a custom recovery to ‘flash’ the file directly into the system memory of the smartphone.
What are Google Apps (or GAPPS), where are they available and in which cases are they necessary
The Google Apps They include the must-have Google apps for any Android device, but especially Google Play Services. Why? Because with this we can, for example, access the application store, although we can download the APK from the Google Play Store independently. And this package can be obtained from different sources, and in different ways. But the most popular is the Open GAPPS package, which is customizable in content and destination. That is, we can ‘customize’ our GAPPS package depending on the device in which we are going to install it.
As we said, Google Apps are usually downloaded to custom ROMs in which they are not pre-installed. And indeed, they are flashed with a custom recovery. However, there are times when the modder offers some GAPPS adapted to your development. Otherwise, generic packages like Open GAPPS are the solution for users.
And the interest, in all this, is the same that we could have when installing a custom ROM. If the manufacturer of our device has ‘abandoned’ the development and support of our model, with distributions like LineageOS we can have our software updated in parallel. We will have new features, better performance, more customization and, of course, compatibility with new applications –and its updates- let them be launched. But it is not something too simple.
