Xiaomi VR, the 5 keys to these virtual reality glasses

1.- Inspired by Google Cardboards

Don’t think it is a complex hardware device with its own components and such. Nothing is further from reality. They are inspired by Google Cardboards. That is to say, they are closer to what it is to create a device in which the smartphone can be deposited and we can carry it on the head, than in a device that has its own functions.

2.- The mobile is the main thing

As is obvious, the mobile is the main thing in all this. Your screen is the screen of your glasses. But not only that. Your processor is the one that processes the image. We have absolutely no hardware elements in the glasses, so it all depends on the smartphone.

3.- What a fabric

Another characteristic of these virtual reality glasses is that they are made of plastic, seeking to be as economical as possible, and covered with fabric. In fact, they are supposed to even be customizable. We do not know if different models will be sold, or if mothers with the title of teacher of dressmaking will be able to design the cases they want for the glasses. In any case, they include a zipper, to close the area where the mobile is left and thus prevent it from falling, one of the problems that many Cardboard-type glasses have. That is, we change the cardboard for plastic and fabric.

4.- Compatible with many mobiles

However, Xiaomi has wanted these virtual reality glasses to be actually compatible with a large number of mobiles. It is clear that they think about their smartphones, but not only about theirs. In fact, they say that they can be used with mobile phones with screens ranging from 4.7 inches to 5.7 inches, which includes, as they have claimed, an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6s Plus, although of course also many others mobiles.

5.- Its price is very cheap

As is logical, being such basic glasses, the main thing in them in the end is that their price will be very cheap. The funny thing is that the company has presented them as the Xiaomi VR Toy. That is, almost more of a toy than a new technology launch, and they have not announced when they will be available or the price they will have. In fact, they are still in beta, so they could still receive some improvement. Its price, yes, according to some media, would not exceed 7 dollars, so with this price, we can not expect them to be anything much better.

Finally, Xiaomi would have decided to launch some very cheap Google Cardboard-style virtual reality glasses, and not pose too complex a challenge now that it is still not clear what the future of virtual reality is in terms of the different platforms.

Will there be a real Xiaomi VR?

What we still have to know is if these Xiaomi VR Toy are nothing more than a launch that serves to open the door to a different future. Perhaps Xiaomi does have in its plans to bet on virtual reality, but it simply wanted to attract attention with a cheap product of this type. Xiaomi’s new glasses were said to be compatible with Google’s Daydream platform. That means the glasses were going to be more than just an improved Google Cardboard. Yet that is what they have finally been. It is possible that Xiaomi has something special prepared for the future, and the name Xiaomi VR Toy makes us think that it is not taking this launch too seriously, but that in the future perhaps real Xiaomi VRs are what is really to come.
